Alan Padgett
After suffering a severe stroke, Alan Padgett faced seemingly insurmountable challenges. When he arrived at the Rehabilitation and Critical Care Hospital of the Black Hills, he required constant monitoring and support. He could not eat solid foods, stand or walk without assistance, use his right arm, or speak more than a word or two. However, Alan’s determination led to an inspiring recovery!
During his month-long stay, Alan received intensive physical, occupational, and speech therapy services designed to meet his specific recovery goals. Alan’s care team, including therapists Rachel, Maren, and Jennifer, encouraged him to achieve his best every day with creative and enthusiastic approaches. Alan rose to the challenge, motivated to return home to his family and regain his independence.
“Everyone at the hospital was kind, professional, and totally focused on Alan’s needs,” his wife, Lauren, said. “We were included in weekly meetings, and even on his ‘off’ weekend days, staff still worked with him to keep him progressing. From the cafeteria staff helping him order meals to the aides who assisted him with dressing and mobility, everyone played a role in helping him improve his movements and speech.”
Alan made significant progress during his time at the Rehabilitation and Critical Care Hospital of the Black Hills. By the end of his stay, he could walk with a cane, move his arm and fingers, and speak in full sentences, which renewed hope for his family. Most importantly, Alan was able to return home safely!
“Alan is still working hard at home,” his family shared. “This morning, he offered to vacuum and did a pretty good job! If it weren’t for you all, I doubt he would be nearly as far along in his recovery.”
“It’s such a blessing to have this amazing place ready to help those who need this higher level of care. We are very thankful to everyone there, from the friendly entrance staff to the awesome therapists, nurses, case managers, aides, doctors, and everyone in between!”
It was a privilege to be part of Alan’s recovery journey. We wish him continued success and all the best as he works hard to achieve new milestones at home!
