Edwin Fire Thunder
Before his hospitalization, Edwin Fire Thunder was doing his best to remain independent. Although a disability affecting his foot limited his mobility, he was still working part-time, driving, and staying active for short periods of time.
His health changed rapidly, though, when he developed a severe infection in his foot. During his emergency care, Edwin also experienced three heart attacks, making his condition even more complex.
Despite treatment efforts, the infection could not be resolved, and his foot ultimately needed to be amputated.
After surgery and a traditional hospital stay, Edwin came to the Rehabilitation and Critical Care Hospital of the Black Hills in Rapid City to continue his recovery. He first received care in the critical care (LTAC) program, where an interdisciplinary team closely monitored his condition, cared for his surgical wound, and managed medications to support his healing until he was ready for the next phase of care.
Once Edwin was medically ready, he progressed to the rehabilitation hospital to begin an intensive therapy program focused on rebuilding strength, mobility, and independence.
During rehabilitation, Edwin focused on practical goals that would support his return home. With help from his therapy team, he practiced standing, taking small steps with a walker, and completing daily activities with greater independence. Over time, those therapy sessions helped him make meaningful progress.
After nearly 42 days in the hospital, Edwin was able to return home! He looked forward to returning to a familiar place and continuing to build on his progress. At the same time, the moment felt bittersweet because of the care, comfort, and encouragement he had received throughout his stay.
Edwin expressed deep appreciation for the team at the Rehabilitation and Critical Care Hospital of the Black Hills. He shared that the staff comforted him, helped him each day, and made a difficult experience easier to manage. He was especially grateful for the kindness and encouragement he received from Tammi, Tanya, and the entire therapy team.
