Kevin Deschamps
When Kevin Deschamps arrived at the Rehabilitation and Critical Care Hospital of the Black Hills, he was facing challenges following a stroke that affected the left side of his body and his vision. He required focused, intensive therapy to regain independence with daily activities and improve his coordination.
Kevin’s occupational therapy team concentrated on improving coordination in his left hand and increasing his awareness of the left side of his visual field. One measure of his progress was the “star cancellation test,” which evaluates a person’s ability to notice and respond to visual information on both sides of a page. When he first took the test, Kevin missed all the stars on the left side. By the time he was discharged, he could scan the page much more effectively, missing only five stars—a significant improvement! He also made substantial gains in fine motor coordination, particularly with tasks that involved small, precise hand movements.
Kevin also worked on exercises to strengthen his arm and improve his standing balance using interactive activities and technology, including the MindMaze platform. MindMaze combines motion-sensing technology with engaging, game-like therapy tasks that help patients regain motor control, coordination, and cognitive function.
“Kevin always tried to do his best and was always willing to participate,” shared one of his therapists. “He always had a smile on, and it was a pleasure to work with him!”
Thanks to his hard work and positive attitude, Kevin made tremendous strides in his recovery. We’re proud to have been part of his journey and wish him continued progress and success!
