Lee poses with the therapy team at the Rehabilitation and Critical Care Hospital of the Black Hills

Lee Brown

When Lee Brown arrived at the Rehabilitation and Critical Care Hospital of the Black Hills, he faced serious mobility and strength challenges. Weakness on his right side limited his ability to move, walk, and perform daily tasks, posing major hurdles on his road to recovery after suffering a stroke.

At the time of his admission, Lee required assistance to walk with a walker and was considered a high fall risk. He could barely lift his right arm away from his body and couldn’t move his wrist or fingers. But from day one, Lee approached every therapy session with determination and a positive attitude.

Lee made remarkable progress. He worked hard in physical therapy, gradually building strength and improving his balance. By the time of his discharge, he was walking independently with a cane and no longer considered a fall risk. He could get on and off the floor on his own and even manage stairs using just one rail!

His upper body strength also improved significantly. Lee could now lift his right arm overhead, fully bend his elbow, and was beginning to regain motion in his wrist and fingers. He also learned to adapt, mastering his daily self-care tasks using his non-dominant hand as recovery continued.

“Lee did amazing in inpatient rehab!” shared one of his therapists. “He was such a hard worker and did anything we asked of him. Way to go, Lee—you did great!”

Now continuing his rehabilitation in outpatient therapy, Lee is focused on achieving his next goal: getting back to work.

Lee, your dedication and progress have been truly inspiring. It was an honor to be part of your journey, and we wish you continued strength and success as you move forward!
