Madi working on physical therapy exercises

Madison Garvin

Madison “Madi” Garvin’s life changed dramatically when she suffered a stroke, which left her with severely limited mobility and communication abilities. After over two months of life-saving care in intensive and neuro-critical care units, she stabilized enough to begin the next phase of her recovery. She arrived at the Rehabilitation and Critical Care Hospital of the Black Hills, where she knew a long road lay ahead, but she refused to give up.

When Madi began speech therapy, she could only mouth simple words like “mom” and “ice” as whispers. However, as she persevered through her therapy, something clicked—she began producing sounds more easily and eventually formed words that could be understood. Over time, her speech became clearer, allowing her to speak in short sentences and hold conversations.

In physical therapy, Madi started with total assistance, needing two therapists to help her sit at the edge of the bed. Holding her head up and controlling her core muscles was a significant challenge. Through consistent work and determination, she made remarkable progress! Madi began to sit independently, reach for objects, and even dance while seated. She built enough strength to stand for over five minutes with support and started taking steps with assistance!

Madi’s family has been with her every step of the way, celebrating her progress.

“Madi’s road to recovery has been nothing short of remarkable,” her family shared. “The therapists at the Rehabilitation and Critical Care Hospital of the Black Hills have worked tirelessly to help her build her strength, mobility, and voice. Their expertise and dedication have exceeded our expectations and played a crucial role in preparing her for the next step in her journey.”

Now, Madi is ready for the next phase of her recovery as she transitions to a specialty rehabilitation facility in Colorado.

Madi, your resilience has inspired everyone around you. Thank you for allowing us to be part of your journey, and we wish you continued success!
