Tom Eichenberger
After suffering a stroke, Tom Eichenberger arrived at the Rehabilitation and Critical Care Hospital of the Black Hills, facing significant challenges. He could only communicate in a few short words and required assistance from three or more people to move or complete basic daily tasks. However, Tom was determined to recover.
With an intensive rehab program, Tom made steady progress. He advanced from needing multiple nurses and therapists to help with everyday activities, such as dressing and grooming, to completing much of his routine independently. His therapy team worked diligently to help him regain movement in his right arm and hand, and eventually, Tom was able to move his shoulder and thumb again.
Tom also built the strength and balance necessary to sit unsupported, stand with help, and eventually walk short distances with assistance. He even achieved one of his biggest personal goals: getting in and out of his truck again, a task that once seemed impossible!
As Tom’s stamina improved, so did his voice. He progressed from using short, breathless phrases to holding full conversations—even teaching his speech therapist how to play Cribbage!
Tom’s progress did not go unnoticed. His therapy team consistently praised his determination, optimism, and resilience.
“Tom is an inspiration for others recovering from a stroke,” said Taylyn, his occupational therapist. “He’s a testament to how hard work, motivation, and a positive mindset can change your life.”
Now, Tom has returned home and is preparing for the next step in his journey. His recovery serves as a powerful reminder of what’s possible with perseverance, expert support, and, as his family might say, a healthy dose of stubbornness.
